End of UIR

This marks the end of UIR and I'm glad I got into this CDS as I was able to learn more about search engines which can be used in my daily work in the future. This subject has taught me on how to get the important data I need and also the websites that are reliable and beneficial to me. I've also learnt how to spend my time efficiently when looking for information I need by using the advance search options on search engines. I have also been exposed to other search engines such as MetaCrawler and Yahoo Directories which has broaden my view on the internet. UIR has also opened my eyes to the world of blogging and that editing HTML codes is not easy at all. That's it for UIR, cya~

My dream holiday

My dream holiday would be a trip to Egypt as I am interest in the history there. To be more specific, I would like to go to Cairo for a holiday. Egypt has so much history content that I find it impossible to learn about all of the history by just reading.

In particular, I would like to see a burial tomb in a pyramid as I have read on how previous kings were buried and how grand the room would look like. However, there would be danger involved and people would be afraid to carry on because of curses/traps etc.

A picture of an ancient Egyptian temple

The way pyramids were build in the past also fascinates me as it is difficult to construct one even in modern times. However slaves were used and died in the process of making the pyramid which makes it a bad history. However, the pyramid still looks magnificent even up to date, and it would remain as one of the greatest landmarks on earth.

I would go to Egypt next time when I get the chance to and I wouldn't mind studying the history of Egypt if I am given the chance.

E-Shopping Spree – If I have $500

For this activity, I have decided to spend the $500 on a guitar and and guitar equipments.

Firstly, I would get the semour duncans pickups from ebay which is currently selling at $73 each. I need to get two of those as my guitar has 3 pickup slots and having all 3 same pickups wouldn't be necessary. Pickups are used to boost the sound of the guitar and there are different types of pickups suited for different genres. The semour duncans pickups are meant for rock/metal genre and I believe it is the kind of genre and songs I prefer to play.

Another thing I'll be getting from ebay would be an acoustic guitar. I have an acoustic guitar at home but it is not functioning well, therefore i wouldn't mind get a new one with the money left over from the pickups. The acoustic would be used to play different types of songs and I would use it if there is a need to for different occasions. Its price is currently $330, and since I do not need a high end acoustic at the moment, this will do just fine.

The total cost of this would be $476 ($146 for two pickups and $330 for the acoustic) which is below budget, and this ends my shopping trip.

UIR Practical 8

Today we were introduced to a new website www.talkingcock.com, a place where Singapore comedians posts latest news with a little discrepancy.

As a Prime minister of Singapore, my views on this would be a nono. Because of these misleading facts on serious matters, people might get mistaken and might get the wrong information. Therefore, as a Prime minister, I would disagree with this website.

As a Singaporean, my views on this website would be a source of joke to me as there would be daily posts on funny things. However, I would not trust this website for any serious information if I am needed to get some.

In my opinion, I found this website to be very misleading as they change a serious issue to a funny issue which isn’t very funny. I hope this website wouldn’t get any fame from what it is doing as I think that website really does not benefit anyone from it.

UIR Practical 6a&6b

I had to evaluate on a source that I found for today and I thought that it was a very interesting as I could explore more into the website and look at things I don’t normally look at in a website.

The website aims were clearly stated that this is a personal website that is meant for people to find out information and to post their comments about the topic.
And the coverage on this site was relatively good as a number of subject areas are included in this website ranging from economy to psychology settlement are available from this website. However I am able to obtain the information I wanted by choosing the category or by just simply searching from the website. Links on this website provided with each article is relevant and based on true reports online or on the news which proves that the articles written are reliable and useful.

The website's information was also up to date and research was based on relevant and accurate facts from different sources.

In my opinion, this is a good and organised website due to archiving and updating of new comments as well as the different categories for many dfferent topics. Not only it is user friendly, but it is also written in proper and good english. Without the registration system, the website is much more enjoyable to navigate around as well as posting comments. This website also allows users to leave a comment on a finished article to express their views, and adding to that, freedom of speech is allowed also therefore users can speak out what they really feel.

Practical 4 & 5

In this practical I have to select certain keywords to research on my topic and the keywords I used were, music, industry, teenagers and trend. I had to use a list of variations in the search to get out the most relevant results.

Next I had to compare the effectiveness between 3 search facilities, google, yahoo and metacrawler.

Google: search algorithm is based on PageRank. PageRank depends on people votes on the website to boost its “rank” so that when people have searched for something in relevance to the website, it would be selected to be shown compared to a page with a lower “rank”. These “ranks” are based on how important and how high quality the website may be.
To get a good match for the query searched, google checks for the number of times the term appears on a page too.

MetaCrawler: does not have their own databases of their webpages and therefore it transmit queries to several search engines.

Search directories: human compiled compared to search engines which are machine compiled, therefore are small in number of pages in the database.

  • All three website gave a different amount of relevant topic when their search engines were used.
  • Google does not take the “and” into consideration when searching but rather it uses the “and” to combine two search words.
  • Metacrawler takes the “and”into consideration when searching and it searches out results with “and” also.
  • Yahoo directory search does not take not of the “and” but rather the keywords in the search. However, it does not look for results with the key word but rather look under categories which fit the keyword and then look for websites related to that category.
Strength and weaknesses of each of the search engines;

Google: Search engine was very useful as variations were allowed and search result were relevant to the search topic.

For an example: “music industry and teenagers trend were the keywords used. I got results with relevance to both music industry and impact teenagers, which helped me get into the result of how music industry impacts on teenager.

MetaCrawler: Search engine did not allow variation as it included the variation in the search results as well.

For an example: “music industry and teenagers trend” were the keywords used. I got results with relevance to “music, industries or both together”, “teenager, impact or both together” and “and”. This messed up my search alittle as a lot of irrelevant results appear. However I was still able to get the topic out after awhile.

Yahoo directory: Search engine did not search for topics with my keywords but rather with categories with relevance to my keywords.

For an example: “music industry and teenagers trend” were the keywords used. I got results with the category of music as music is in one of the yahoo directories, which refered me to website in relevance to music, but not about industry and teenagers.

In my opinion, I prefer google to the other two search engines as I feel that google provides me with more relevant query results and that I can relate better to them.

UIR Practical 3

Today I'm supposed to differentiate between different purposes from different resources.

Resource 1: http://www.allbusiness.com/marketing-advertising/market-groups-youth-market-teens/5628825-1.html

Purpose of resource: Information

Reason: Yet another website which gives factual information of how the music trend is like with teenagers these days.

Resource 2: ://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2008/03/teenagers-shun.html

Purpose of resource : Advocacy

Reason: The post is created by a user to tell whoever reads it why the music industry is suffering currently due to teenagers not supporting original music.

Resource 3: http://www.unsprungmedia.com/unsprung-facts-figures/

Purpose of resource : Information

Reason: To show readers current statistic in the music industry and how it is deproving as the years go by

I've learnt that different websites have different purpose which are meant to be used as different resources.

UIR practical 2

Today I've done UIR practical two and learnt about two different types of website, one of the an organisation website and the other a personal website.

1. A personal website which is similar to a blog for the owner to post, and for visitors to post comments.
Link: http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2008/03/teenagers-shun.html

2. An organisation website with realtime facts given, sources are verified.
Link: http://www.unsprungmedia.com/unsprung-facts-figures/

Basically I used google as my search engine and basic keywords I used were like Common, trends, music industry, teenagers, nowadays, present.
Music industry trends had to be used to search together to help search for a more direct link to the topic. But words like teenager helped narrow down the search of what I’m specifically looking for. However, when I included words like nowadays or present, I came to the page where it describes general music trends for teenagers about today, which is generally my topic.

Major differences between both websites would be that the personal website allowed comments from people who have read about the article and language was not an issue for it. However the organization website which stated facts about the topic, didn’t allow any comments from viewers and would most probably not allow any discreet languages to be posted up there.
